Fugue
Trevor Martin and Kym Olsen performance collaboration, 2004
Project description:
Morganville presented Fugue in 2004 at Insight Arts and Performing Arts Chicago's Edge Festival.
Using trauma as a point of departure this piece combines elements of personal trauma taken
from history and popular culture ranging from the book Sybil and The Wizard of Oz to
Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper, studies of child killers and their victims,
and 19th century cases of hysteria. The work questions aspects of displacing voice and
complicating authorial position. How does a body and mind respond to ongoing threats and
mistreatment? How do heroes function? What is too big? Does the heroine have a name?
What is the legacy of war? How is it manifest in the psyche? What is an epilogue?
How can you tell when a picture is lying?
