MORGANVILLE (Trevor Martin & Kym Olsen) (Short Statement)
We hold these truths to be self-evident: Trevor Martin and Kym Olsen have worked using a process-oriented structure for over six years in their work. They begin with specific questions such as How does one define loss? or What is love? They answer these questions through a variety of vocabularies including those that are aesthetic, historic, personal, written, and especially intuitive. During an intensive search through seemingly discordant images, sounds, and texts they begin to weave together meaning allowing the overriding theme to expand in unexpected ways. An integral part of their work is finding ways to incorporate physically challenging elements. These may consist of repetitive gestures, movements and actions that push their limits of strength and endurance. They use references to popular culture in order to: point out absurdities, transitions, entry points, or to make specific a general point. Often the human body is taken for granted and used in purely utilitarian ways. They keep this in mind when working. It is of primary importance to them to show the body performing acts, which are out of the ordinary. By this they do not mean performing extraordinary feats; rather, their acts are ordinary gestures placed in atypical contexts. They relish in the unexpected and the unrepeatable nature of performance, the immediacy of the experience, and the process of keeping the mind rooted in the body. Underlying the work is an examination of meaning-making - how significance is ordered, delivered, and received. Their artistic language emphasizes: subjective perception, interior logic, intuitive knowledge, and alternative histories. |
